Join us for a fun evening of multi-dimensional storytelling using live storytellers and illustrated scrolls to share tales in a community setting.

WHAT IS A CRANKIE?
A Crankie is an old storytelling art form using a long, illustrated scroll that is wound onto two spools to create ‘moving backdrops” that make a story come alive.
Anabel Bouza is a Cuban-born paper artist and illustrator. Her work weaves nostalgia, fantasy, and nature to create scenes that draw from the candor of vintage storybooks and the language of folktales. Sarah Gowan and Bill Quern play instrumental traditional roots music from the American Appalachians as they share crankie stories. Eric Fiorito, Mike Tyksinski, and Matheson Westlake will be performing alone and together on a series of crankie stories. Eric is an artist, performer, and proud tool pusher. He is also the Production & Volunteer Manager at ArtYard. Michael Tyksinski owns the Frenchtown Home and Hardware and was first introduced to crankies by ArtYard. Matheson Westlake is a DJ on WDVR Radio, and Supervising Librarian at Holland Free Public Library.
Storytelling Arts is a 25-year-old nonprofit organization with a mission to protect, promote, and impart the living art of storytelling to build literacy, strengthen communities, and nurture the human spirit. The Birdhouse Center of the Arts, founded in 2012, is a creative hub inspired by the core belief that music and art can transform lives. Both organizations are based in Lambertville.
